Take a moment and think about your vehicle’s tires, one of them are missing some air, it does not have the appropriate dimensions or there are not the right type for the road. All of these things may put us on a risk, perhaps our brakes fail or it wears the shock absorbers.
Running shoes, as well as car tires, are an important element so you must know chose the proper footwear to get the better results. However, there are many options and a lot of questions on the selection process, so we have clarified some of them for you.
How important is to select a suitable shoe?
It’s utmost importance if you are to achieve a good performance and take advantage of shoes’ potential because they compensate the foot biomechanics deficiency.
So if foot is unstable, the shoe will provide the needed support to improve it. Otherwise if foot is stable, the shoe should be flexible. In addition to affect our performance, the inadequate selection of the running shoes can lead to injury.
How do I know what kind of running shoes should I use?
To know what type of footwear must use, we recommend performing a depressed test. Most of specialist sports stores on Canada have the personnel and equipment to perform this test. However, if you don’t have any of these stores near your neighbourhood, you can make a homemade version of this test that can help identify which type of depressed do you have. To do this, you will only need a flat surface (can be a paper or cardboard) and a container with water, you get wet, slightly, the plant of your feet and depress the paper. The footprint marked on the paper may indicate that you have a foot with high, medium or low arch – the last one is wellknown as flat foot -.
There are also other things that influence the prescription of a suitable shoe, such as the runner weight, the distance travelled and the foot’s hardness or flexibility. Therefore an expert advice is always suggested.
What types of running shoes are there?
There are three major categories of running shoes and their names in English are – which is perhaps the name by which you will be able to identify them in the boxes where they come from – Neutral, Stability and Motion Control.
The Neutral footwear is designed for those runners who have high arch. They are flexible for a foot type that is usually fairly rigid, thus allowing the foot to move freely and dissipating the impact.
The Stability category is more firm and they are designed for those people who have a lower arch. It provides a greater stability to a foot that by having a mild pronation has a major mobility, thus improving the lever of the foot. Finally there are the Motion Control type, these are specially designed for those runners who have a low arch or flat foot. This type of shoes are even more rigid and thus improves the inefficient lever that has this type of foot.
